Movie Review: “American Skin”

Actor Nate Parker–whose done films such as “Beyond the Lights”, “Pride”, “Tuskegee” and other offerings—has graced us with a new film titled “American Skin.” Check out a non-spoiler review of Parker’s new movie “American Skin”, here at TheOriginalChatman.com.

Time and time again, we’ve lived through what seems like a non-stop cycle of police brutality through the eyes of marginalized communities, especially within the African-American demographic.

For most of us, we demand to see visible accountability in the aftermath of police brutality incidents, whether fatal or non-fatal. While accountability and justice are supposed to go hand-in-hand, I refer back to my previous statement regarding it being one drastic, inescapable cycle. Nate Parker‘s latest film, American Skin, switches gears on this age-old narrative in which justice becomes more than what is actually given.

Ex-Army veteran Lincoln “Linc” Jefferson (played by Parker) works hards to provide a better environment for his teenage son Kajani, also known as KJ. Everything seems to come through for the father-son dynamic duo: Linc finds janitorial work at a local private school. His employment with the school awards KJ access to the prestigious institution. Ahh yes! Parents striving to provide for their kids what they weren’t afforded growing up…it’s a play-by-play of access to the “American Dream.” Sooner than later, the “dream” is drastically cut short allowing reality to sink in for Lincoln.

Photo via @NateParker (Twitter)

On one fateful night, Linc and KJ are pulled over for a routine traffic stop. The routine traffic stop becomes deadly and KJ ends up not making it home safely with Linc. This particular scene in the film can reek of predictable outcomes for the movie’s plot; however, the plot that develops throughout the film is a refreshing take on the events following another tragic police brutality event.

Parker’s character Lincoln carries the film– and its supporting cast—into difficult conversations/topics that usually provide no answers. How do you seek justice when you know it’s never been properly awarded, ever? Would you take matters into your own hands? Without spoilers, I’ll provide some context here.

Imagine this: Peaceful protests after a police-civilian shooting. Maybe a riot here and there. Saddened family members begging for justice on our TVs and social media feeds. Remember that cycle from earlier? This is what I’m referring to here. I can’t speak for all within my community; however, it usually feels like one big okie-dokie. Lincoln echoes this exact sentiment in the film, and it feels like he’s speaking exactly to us and only us.

Watch American Skin on all premium video on-demand services, and then come back and comment on this post letting me know your opinions on the movie. Thanks for reading!

Movie Review – “Project Power” (Spoiler-free!!!)

Netflix ‘s newest original movie “Project Power” stars Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback. Check out my review of the movie on TheOriginalChatman.com.

“What’s your power?

Despite a global pandemic (among other things), it’s a nice distraction to wrap yourself up within a entertaining movie or TV series. Netflix has held us down with some heat for summer 2020. No, not literal heat! I’m referring to the variety of original content they’ve released —and will continue to release—throughout these next few months.

Project Power, Netflix’s latest original movie, claims an interesting take on the superhero genre. Set in New Orleans, a disgruntled city cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a very determined ex-soldier (Jamie Foxx), and a troubled teenager (Dominique Fishback) join forces to track down the organization behind Power, a drug that allows its victims to experience a flash of random superpowers for five minutes. Check out TheOriginalChatman’s review below:

First and foremost, I need to say something. Jamie Foxx’s acting range is unmatched! His role as Art, a man-on-a-mission/ex-soldier, is highly believable from the moment you see Foxx on the screen. Through a series of unfortunate events, he purposely ends up meeting Robin, a teen Power dealer striving to make ends meet for her diabetic mother. Foxx’s role of Art is the classic “bad guy doing good things” type.

Just a way to add more images to the post.
Art (Jamie Foxx) and Robin (Dominique Fishback) from a scene in Netflix’s “Project Power.”

I could continue to praise Foxx’s performance; however, the real star of the movie is Fishback’s Robin character. Tough, street smart and book smart. Fearless. More than another strong (black) female lead, Robin shows the layered truth of wanting to do more with your life while feeling stuck under life’s circumstances. While Art and Robin navigate the seedy underworld of New Orleans, throughout the movie, Art asks Robin the same question: “What’s your power?”

Robin is a gifted lyricist, but doesn’t share her talent with the world until Art puts her on the spot. Not quite a father-daughter dynamic, Art and Robin are two people making the best out of bad decisions. Based on their dynamic in the movie, I’d take Art and Robin versus Batman and Robin any day!

Lastly, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s cop character Frank seems out of place. His performance seemed very lackluster. The grizzled “it’s my city and I do what i must to protect others” cop role just didn’t seem very convincing to me.

Overall, if you’re looking for a story that flips the superhero genre around, lovable characters, and a great story behind them, Netflix’s Project Power is a must see.

“Need It”: Music Video Review

Kaytranada’s video for “Need It” is cinematic gold. Feel free to check out his latest album, “BUBBA”, which is a great pick-me-up for the times we’re living in right now.

I’m not gonna lie y’all…Kaytranada wasn’t on my musical radar until I saw him live at Something in the Water last summer. Now that I’m finally hip, his music gets heavy rotation in my Apple Music library. His most recent album, BUBBA, has so many hits that it’s unfair to anyone else in the electronic music lane! Since it’s December 2019 release, Kaytranada has dropped visuals for “10%” and “Need It”, featuring Kali Uchis and Masego, respectively. For this post, I’ll be diving deep into the “Need It” visual.

The video’s opening scene obviously grabs inspiration from the Hype Williams-directed late ’90s flick Belly. The blue LED lighting throughout the video creates a mood. Who doesn’t love a good movie reference? Boom! Club scene. People are dancing and getting lit to the music. While the aesthetic and plot alone seem predictable, and the visual continues its course, you will find out that it isn’t.

Two groups of guys that clearly have beef with one another start a club brawl that quickly escalates. It’s not apparent what started it all, but that’s besides the point. Fists are thrown and people scatter out the way to let them do what do best–kill each other. What appears as a drug deal gone wrong leading into a physical confrontation–further leads to punches exchanged between both crews transforms into a well-choreographed, and friendly dance battle via the style of You Got Served. Honestly, I’d give my last dollar to see a good dance battle up-close and personal, with respective social distancing guidelines! Masego‘s vocals are peppered throughout the video yet he and Kaytranada don’t appear until the last minute and a half. Fun fact: The main actor in this video is Tight Eyez–the man who created krump dancing. Take a look at the video below, comment, and let me know what you think!

Lute – GED (Gettin’ Every Dolla) [Music Video Review]

For the video of his latest single “G.E.D. (Gettin’ Every Dolla)”, Lute brings a dual meaning to the song’s title and its visual.

N*ggas used t0 bump The Warm Up by Cole,

My n*gga used to warm the house with the stove

Lute

While the overall themes of Lute‘s music video for “GED” may be very bizarre, it’s worth tw0-and-a-half minutes of your day to still watch it. Metaphorically speaking, Lute turns his “pain into wealth” in a various ways. For example, the gold-mouthed rapper is partaking in activities typically reserved for the wealthy elite–such as playing chess or mounting a horse for what he appears to be dressed in a full jockey costume.

Towards the end of the video, viewers will notice that the creative direction behind “GED” and a general education diploma is synonymous with the visual’s vision. With this visual, it brings back videos with strange concepts that still work in the end. Check it out below and let me know you opinion in the comments below!

Weekly Wrap-Up[4/20-2020 – 4/26/20]

Last week (the week of April 20th), there was a lot going on the hip-hop world. Catch up on all your latest hip-hop news here at TheOriginalChatman.com

In #GoodMusicFriday-fashion, Top Dawg Entertainment—home of Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and more— released a string of singles the week of April 20th. Label founder Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith kicked off #TDEAppreciationWeek to celebrate his birthday which was the reason behind the week’s release of singles. (While Tiffith’s artists let off new songs for their individual fan bases, he blessed elderly public housing by paying their rent.)

Monday 4/20/20

Last time we heard from Ab-Soul was December 2016, from his solo album Do What Thou Wilt Do. Soulo’s “Dangerookipawaa Freestyle” song title borrows inspiration from Top Dawg’s social media handle @dangerookipawaa. On the track, he compares himself to greats of the past and present such as Craig Mack and Eminem, meanwhile name-dropping frequent collaborator and fallen rapper friend Mac Miller.

Tuesday 4/21/20

Lone wolf (his EP title from last year) Zacari, notably remembered from his assist on Kendrick’s hit song “LOVE.”, dropped “Edamame” and “This Woman’s Work.”

“Edamame” is about the loss of a love interest, and “This Woman’s Work”, an homage to the original song by Maxwell, expresses his relationship regrets.

Wednesday 4/22/20

Isaiah Rashad built a cult following, especially after Rashad’s sophomore effort 2016’s The Sun’s Tirade. While Rashad may be an artist on a highly-sought after rap label, his “everyday man” feel within his music attracts his fan base. That’s not the case with his latest single. “Why Worry” deals with forever changing rules to the ugly side of “fame.”

Thursday 4/23/20

SiR‘s latest sophomore album, Chasing Summer, did some big time placement on the Billboard 200 reaching the 64th placement. Following the success of this album, he released the Boogie-assisted song “Rapper Weed” which surprisingly doesn’t have a drug-induced sound to it. The vibe is very relaxed as always on any song by SiR.

Friday 4/24/20

Reason has made a name for himself outside his home label–especially fiercely rapping and competing with fellow Californian rapper Cozz of the Dreamville camp. “Might Not Make It” is another brash comparison similar to “LamboTruck.” “Might Not Make It” fantasizes about the crazy things Reason would do if he had 24 hours left to live on this planet. This is the biggest name-drop I’ve heard in a while!

Cozz and Reason – “Lambo Truck” [Music Video review]

Dreamville’s Cozz and TDE’s Reason team up to bring a visual for one of the best songs from ROTD3.

Top Dawg with some Dreamers

Can’t believe it, you surprised, ‘prised

Reason

Imagine planning a robbery on your boss because you’re pissed at being underlooked or underappreciated. You voice your concerns and oompf—nothing happens! The cause of your under-appreciation is money-related. Money or a lack thereof can make us go crazy! This is exactly what Cozz and Reason (from the respective rap labels Dreamville and TDE) team up for in the visual for “LamboTruck.”

You can’t have a video for a song called “LamboTruck” without an actual Lamborghini truck in it. The camera pans a quick view of the truck and boom–we’re thrown into the start of the video. Atlanta rapper-producer Childish Major is on the song’s hook, while Cozz and Reason trade individual bars before swapping them out for their final verse, a back-and-forth one.

Image via @Dreamville/Twitter.

Bags of money floating over Cozz’s head symbolize what he wants more of. His verse symbolizes how he’d plan to attain it, which even includes a hint at leaving Dreamville and seeking more success and exposure at TDE (not to say Dreamville isn’t a success beast in its own right). Reason’s mirrored reflection raps to himself; meanwhile he watches himself as a newscaster for the Lambo News Update. Before the video was teased all over social media, I was unaware of the creative direction the video would take.

While the colloboration of these two L.A. natives (from very diverse rap labels nonetheless)is exciting upon each listen, the visual could’ve been more entertaining as “LamboTruck” is a huge ROTD3 fan-favorite. I will admit that Cozz squaring up with a cardboard cutout of Top Dawg, and Reason beating up a cardboard cutout of J.Cole is priceless! Check out the video above and let me know what you think in the comments below!

“Something In The Water” Recap

For those of you who missed out on Something In The Water, check out my review/recap here at TheOriginalChatman.com!

Virginia has already been on the map, but Something in The Water made it official.

“It is beautiful to see that everyone realizes that this was always supposed to be more than a music festival,” shared Pharrell in an interview with The Virginian-Pilot. Now that Something In The Water has came and went–I speak for myself and other VA locals when I say this—we’re ready for next year! Pharrell’s festival creation will be back on the Oceanfront for 2020. Check out the source here.

“If you know, you know.” These prophetic words from Pusha T (one-half of the Virginia Beach rap duo The Clipse) were best said on his recent body of work, Daytona. Virginia natives (such as myself) have long recognized Virginia as a hotbed of musical and cultural relevance before the epic scale of Something In The Water. Hampton Roads is up to its neck in talent. It’s no coincidence Something In The Water (SITW) fell under the same weekend as College Beach Week; nor is it a coincidence Pharrell brought us SITW at the right time.

friday 4/26/19

That Friday was supposed to set the weekend tone; unfortunately,
Mother Nature wasn’t letting anyone be great! Rain and thunderstorms prevented the day from running its course. While several people scrambled to various Oceanfront restaurants to take cover, I found myself hiding inside an arcade off 14th and Atlantic. The sun beamed through clouds a few times; nevertheless, the entire festival was shutdown that day.

In the eyes of some, Friday’s rainy forecast washed away high hopes of the festival being a success. I knew better, and I felt it too. Waking up Saturday morning with my optimism still in tact, day 2 of SITW was going to be different. Those words Pharrell echoed to the press, “more than a festival” were sustained by the various activities and community conversations offered throughout the weekend. Furthermore, the vast amount of food vendors, local and beyond Hampton Roads, was enough to keep me distracted from Friday’s fiasco.

More Than A Music Festival

For example, corporate sponsors Adidas and Timberland brought forth forward-fashion (free customizable tote bags and Adidas slides) mixed with grass-root community efforts that reach a global scale(Timberland presented festival-goers the chance to plant traceable trees that will revitalize Haiti’s ecosystem while also handing out free swag). American Express presented an Hampton Roads-themed/SITW Art-Walk scattered throughout the Oceanfront. Pharrell called on Chad Hugo and several other famous guests to join them for a live taping of OTHERtone, Pharrell’s Beats 1 Apple Music radio show. I firmly believe Pharrell took a page from other festivals, applied his own spin for SITW, and created a wave for the next few years.

saturday 4/27/19

Saturday’s line-up was like THAAAAAAAAT. A$AP Ferg, SZA, Kaytranada, Travis Scott, and Pharrell and Friends.

Kaytranada

Kaytranada is a name everyone should know. He’s worked with names like Syd, Ty Dolla Sign, and his live DJ sets will get you moving no matter who you are! Unfortunately, not everyone was jamming as hard as they should’ve been. I know the word “vibe” is used a lot but it was nothing but tons of those during his DJ set.

SZA

If you’ve ever followed me on any social media over the past few years, you’re aware of my love for Solana Imani Rowe, better known by her stage name SZA. (For the record, I’ve been a fan since before her 2017 debut album Ctrl). Her signature free-flowing frolic dance and soulful smooth crooning are staples of her artist brand. There was no one/nothing that could stop me from witnessing her beauty and grace up close and personal for the first time. As powerful as that sounds, it’s a half-truth
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . SZA does make very relatable music; however, her music is mainly from a female perspective. (insert photos/videos here)

Imagine how hard it was for someone over 6-feet tryna stay lowkey while singing songs like songs like “Go Gina”, “Say It Like That”, “Drew Barrymore” and “Love Galore”. Willing to risk any stares I received (and I did get some wild ones), I kept my cool even loudly whispering, “That’s my wife! I love you SZA!” After her set ended, I turned around to look for my dispersed friends. On the journey back to them, I met a random kid with a Ctrl 2017 Tour shirt. When asked about his t-shirt, he told me he was proud to wear it and even prouder to call himself a SZA fan. We dapped each other up and then I left. That small interaction with him made me feel less crazy for admiring her as a fan.

Pharrell & Friends

No Pharrell Williams slander will be tolerated as long as I’m alive. DON’T YOU. DO. IT! Who do know you has enough juice to bring out Snoop Dogg, Charlie Wilson, Tyler the Creator, Missy Elliot, Diddy, and Busta Rhymes on the stage.. on the same night!? P warmed up the crowd rapping some notable hits he’s produced/sang on over the years such as “Hot In Hurrr”, “Alright” and “Mr. Me Too.”

Diddy diddy-bopped and hit us with a smooth, crisp dance number shared along with his three sons. Timbaland gave the crowd nostalgic You Got Served vibes doing “Breathe In, Breathe Out” with fellow VA native and (often-forgotten) veteran artist Magoo. Snoop and Charlie chimed in to help Pharrell serenade the crowd with “Beautiful.” The stars were aligned on the beach.

You know that feeling when you reach the highest of highs, and excitement becomes an out-of-body experience? That’s exactly how I felt when JayZ slyly positioned himself next to Pharrell for his verse on “Frontin'”.

Any ounce of cool I *thought* had in that moment was lost when Jay popped up and continued doing hits like “Izzo”, “I Just Wanna Love You” and my personal favorite “PSA(Public Service Announcement)”.

Allow me to reintroduce myself…my name is Hov!

Sunday 4/28/19

By the time Sunday arrived, my voice, body, and mind were drained from the whylin’ out I put on for Saturday’s line-up. Nevertheless I kept that same energy from Saturday for Sunday. Chris Brown, Teddy Riley and Anderson . Paak were the last few artists I were ready to give my energy to.

In similar fashion to Pharrell and Friends, Teddy Riley snuck in some surprises throughout his set. 🎶 Doooon’t let me goooooo! 🎶I like the way you work it–No Diggity!🎶

Next thing I know, Coko of the ’90s girl group SWV came thru with her silky summertime voice to perform “Weak” and “Right Here (Human Nature Remix).” Somewhere between “No Diggity” and “Don’t Let Me Go”, Teddy transitions his keyboard playing into “Curious” by Midnight Star, the sample behind Lil Duval’s “Livin’ My Best Life.” Lil Duval jump-skip-hops along the stage and everyone goes nuts!

Chris Brown

Light rain came thru and reared its ugly head before Chris’s set causing him to hop on stage 20 minutes later than his 9:10 showtime. To be honest, I’m not even mad he was lip-synching for the most part. He danced so vividly I couldn’t believe the moves I was watching on stage. They were done so smoothly and effortlessly!

Anderson . Paak

Prior to me writing this, one of my friends recently just got hip to Anderson .Paak and I’m sad to inform y’all this person is no longer my friend! 😔

I kid, of course!😜 Without discrediting the legacy of the late soul singer James Brown, I can honestly say Anderson . Paak is the modern day James Brown with a modern approach. When the Chris Brown crowd left, I discretely inched closer towards the stage in an effort to catch the groovy vibe he and his band The Free Nationals gave off to wrap up Sunday night.

Something in the water was…

Overall one of the greatest experiences I’ve been a part of in a while! It’s about time people stop sleeping on Virginia and what we have going on in our hometown. Something is truly in the water, alright.

“Boomerang” Ep. 5 Review: “The Let Out”

Check out a spoiler-free review of #BoomerangonBET here at TheOriginalChatman.com

“The Let Out” is by far the best episode of season one! Imagine getting lit on Saturday with your crew, then appearing in church the next morning in those same clothes. We’ve all done it before…well..at least once or twice anyways!

Bryson, David, Simone, Tia, and Rocky(Tia’s girlfriend) enjoy a night out on the town. They all get in free at the club— courtesy of Ari’s (Leland B. Martin) party promoter connection. Ari is kicking game to a young, fly, beautiful woman. The stranger asks him why he’s posted outside the club and he simply replies: “the let out.” The “let out” is the after party that usually takes place in the parking lot of particular establishments. Imagine this: Dudes shooting their shot. Ladies flexing in their rental cars. Car speakers blasting music in the parking lot after hours.

Always looking to uproot Tia’s brand, Simone used the opportunity of the crew’s night out to convince the local DJ to play Tia’s song. When he flexed on her, she used the opportunity to go around her roadblock. Never one to accept defeat, Simone hustles until she gets her way. You’ve got to admire her work ethic even when she’s in play mode!

Things heat up a little bit as Simone gives Bryson a little twerk action at the “let out”…I see you boi! Simone + Bryson = Bimone? Sryson? Are pet names still a thing or nah?
Tia debuting her new single at the “let out” as the crowd turns up with her. Spoiler alert…issa bop!

David lands more screen time this episode. This episode goes back and forth between Saturday night and Sunday morning at David’s church(he’s a preacher in case y’all forgot!). David preaches about self-defeat in the pursuit of being perfect. As much as I laughed thru episode..I had to stop and recognize that David’s sermon hit home. Millennials strive for perfection in all we do. When we fall short of it, we bow our heads in defeat often leaving us discouraged. He ended the sermon on a high note giving the congregation clarity and peace of mind.

Finally, what I enjoyed most about this episode are the pivotal church scenes. The Black church has always played a turning point for some of our favorite characters in our favorite shows and movies of decades past. Hopefully the show will dabble in that a little bit.

“Boomerang” Season 1, Episode 4 Review: “Call A Spade”

TheOriginalChatman gives a spoiler-free review of season 1, episode 4 of #BoomerangOnBet. Check it out here!

Boomerang continues the momentum it garnered in its first three episodes; however, the ladies of the show haven’t had their solo shine until now. “Call A Spade” puts the ladies in focus for an episode; meanwhile, the fellas take a break from the plot’s focus.

Simone and Tia are now roommates, courtesy of Simone’s generosity. To keep it a hunnit, Simone recruits Tia as her roommate since she’s behind on her rent. The episode opens with Simone slightly gawking over Tia’s Instagram page. (Remember, Tia is now an “artist” and Simone is her manager.) The show has previously established Tia’s sexuality, but the way she glances over Tia’s IG…does she have eyes for her friend?

Anyways…a blocked caller reaches out to Simone. She answers and on the other end is her god-sister Tay Tay (played by Chicago rapper Dreezy). Apparently Tay-Tay got into a drunken argument with her boyfriend which lead her to being detained by the police. Tay’s bail is $2,000…aka money that no one in the crew has. Ouch! Simone rallies up the troops to rescue Tay Tay: Tia, Crystal, and Rocky (Tia’s girlfriend that constantly beefs with Simone).

Day turns into night. Eventually, Simone, Tia, Crystal, and Rocky find themselves at a random house party. While all on the same mission, the only one concerned about Tay is Simone. Tia and Rocky team up for spades, leaving Crystal to flirt with some random guy she seems interested in. Never shying away from a guilt trip, Simone reminds Crystal that it’s fine to check in her feelings regarding the significance of the day(this day marks a year of divorce from David). Crystal insists she is fine, but the truth of the matter is Simone projected her fear of romance and intimacy on Crystal due to her complicated relationship with Bryson. “Call a spade a spade.”

I’ll be reviewing episode 5, catch y’all next time! – TheOriginalChatman

“Boomerang” Season 1, Episode 3 Review: “Stand in Your Power”

Check out the season 1, episode 3 review of #BoomerangOnBET here at TheOriginalChatman!

This week was about reclaiming one’s “power” which ironically happens to be the episode’s theme. How many of us feel or have felt powerless at work, in our love lives, or within other areas? * slowly raises my hand* For most people, power and control become synonymous ideals leading to our destiny.

Bryson still yearns for Simone’s heart, yet he’s still having trouble articulating his feelings for her—-in efforts to not destroy their friendship. Furthermore, his work superiors can’t properly understand the visions he has for the company. Bryson seeks guidance from his therapist. During this therapy session, he revealed that his power struggles began with his mother’s emotional neglect vs. her relentless work ethic.

Poor Bryson.

Although these two power struggles collide, Bryson stands in his power towards the episode’s end.

Elsewhere, Simone is struggling to make her marketing skills flourish without The Graham Agency’s support(she was fired from the company with her name on it back in episode 1!).

At the agency, Bryson creeps his way to being back in control. His boss Victoria gently dismantles his project idea, but allows the young protege to follow his plan with confidence. All is well until Simone appears before him. Their chance encounter leads them working together on a project: but can he do his job without catching feelings?

In the midst of the project, Tia, Simone’s friend who she reached out to for rebuilding her brand image, is used as a pawn for Simone to pull on Bryson’s heartstrings. She’s used to getting her way but Bryson sticks up for himself by making an opinionated choice with logic instead of feelings, yes..those some feelings which got him here in the first place.

Let this be a lesson that being in your feelings can and WILL get you caught up. Don’t be afraid to boss up and be your best self ladies and gents!

“Boomerang” Season 1, Episode 2 Review

Check out the second episode review of #BoomerangonBET here at TheOriginalChatman.com

Boomerang’s second episode, Game Night  is light-hearted and fun, yet two of the main characters are left in their feelings towards the end. Simone (Tetona Jackson) and Bryson (Tequan Richmond) take a break from conquering the world as their friends David (RJ Walker), Crystal (Brittany Inge), Ari (Leland Martin), and Tia (Instagram star Lala Milan) play board games hosted at Bryson’s place. This episode establishes more of their friends character development, motif, etc.

(Speaking of character development,I respect Lena Waithe and BET for representing the black LGBT community. Bryson and David’s friend Ari is gay and it doesn’t seem to throw off their chemistry as friends.)

While most twenty-somethings choose the club as an outlet for fun, Bryson made it a tradition to opt from club-hopping and stay at home with drinks, snacks, and the good energy of some great friends playing board games. Simone and her girls arrive at Bryson’s crib but not before swapping stories about their sex life. The door swoops open and the gentlemen’s faces beam with schoolboy joy. It’s a battle of the sexes. Let the games begin!

Excluding Ari and Tia, this episode establishes the crew’s history of friendship dating back to elementary school. Bryson has always had eyes for Crystal yet remained in the friend zone; meanwhile a shared beer and a couple laughs between David and Crystal reveal that David’s position as an aspiring preacher possibly lead to their falling out as a couple.

While David and Crystal’s relationship seems like a lost cause, he advises Bryson that maybe the timing isn’t right for him to be with Simone, or that they have things to work out before being together. As someone whose been in the friend zone a few times, I feel you bruh! Game Night chronicles a topic our generation spends a lot of time obsessing over: love and what we think love truly is.

Tune in next Tuesday to see what happens with Bryson, Simone, and the rest of the gang next Tuesday at 10.

“Boomerang” Season 1, Episode 1 Review

"Being young, black, and gifted is cool but it's exhausting."

Although the millennial generation is often misunderstood thru the eyes of those before us, lately we’ve been made more relatable with hit TV shows such as Atlanta or Insecure. (Shout out to Donald Glover and Issa Rae!) The same thing can be said for  BET’s new series Boomerang—  a continuation of the titular-film-turned series with an updated story.

The series premiere follows the children of Marcus Graham and Jacqueline Boyer—-Simone and Bryson—vying to break from free their parents’ shadows. Their parents built The Graham Agency which is Atlanta’s top-notch ad agency. It’s already established Simone and Bryson are young, black, and successful. What more could they ask for?

There’s a strong connection between the movie and its series successor; however, the level of comedy in this rom-com doesn’t hit right away. Nevertheless, the series does seem promising based off one scene in particular. The business-savvy Marcus has the opportunity to create an ad for a energy drink client. This energy drink is geared towards millennials, and when Marcus sees the opportunity to pitch a different direction for the commercial he takes it–that’s until the pesky yet determined Simone swoops in.

Overall, the show may be geared towards the younger generation but for older fans of the movie, I believe everyone can find something enjoyable in the series. Be sure to check out Boomerang on BET Tuesday nights at 10.

Lena Waithe and Halle Berry Team Up For A ‘Boomerang’ “Sequel”

Who remembers the ’90s classic movie “Boomerang”? Apparently there’s gonna be a SEQUEL–but not like you think! Read more at TheOriginalChatman.com!

Without a doubt, most films and TV shows from previous eras are untouchable and don’t deserve a remake. Lena Waithe and Halle Berry aim to change this perspective with a spin on a classic ’90s romantic comedy.

Both women serve as executive producers to the sequel of  Boomerang. The original film follows womanizer Marcus (Eddie Murphy) meeting his match in the form of Jacqueline Boyer (Robin Givens) before falling in love with the under-looked love interest Angela Graham (Berry’s breakout role in the movie). Instead of going the movie route, Waithe and Berry steered themselves into cable TV territory. Berry tells Variety, the update is “less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story.”

Most people recognize Waithe behind her writing role in the “Thanksgiving” episode for Netflix’s “Master of None.” Consequently, Lena continued creative efforts for Showtime’s “The Chi” while landing onscreen roles in “This Is Us”, “Ready Player One”, and more.

The new series follows the lives of Jacqueline’s son and Marcus and Angela’s daughter as they step out of their parents’ shadows to create a lasting legacy of their own.

BET  has picked up Boomerang as a 10-episode series. With no date in sight, the network continues to helm new projects that expand on original programming content.

  • Moss explained his choice of neckwear after the ceremony ended on camera with this anecdote:

“What I wanted to be able to express with my tie is to let these families know that they’re not alone. I’m not here, you know, voicing, but by these names on my tie, and a big platform as the Pro Football Hall of Fame—there’s a lot of stuff going on in our country, and I just wanted to let these family members know that they’re not alone.”

1. Lebron James signs a four-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers!

4. Chance the Rapper is newly engaged!

  • Earlier this week, Chance the Rapper celebrated the the fourth of July and freaked it (*Kendrick Lamar “King’s Dead” ad-lib).
  • On the day most people in the United States seem to hate the most, Chance made sure to make the holiday a memorable one: by proposing to his long-time girlfriend and baby’s mother, Kirsten Corley.
  • Surrounded by loved ones at a barbecue, Chance alluded to the proposal with this tweet:

Here’s video footage of the proposal, in which Chance asked, “Will you make me a man and be my wife?”

  • A “fan”  disapproved of Chance’s proposal and Chano wasn’t having it. Chance exchanged tweets and even went as far as to personally DM this Twitter user. What do y’all think? Be sure to sound off in the comments below!

Fri. 7/6

5. Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande drop the video for their duet, “Bed.”

  • So prior to making this post, I spent roughly 5 minutes watching the video for Nicki Minaj‘s latest duet with Ariana Grande. The video was bleh, and the video seemed very lackluster for a song that’s supposed to give a sexy summer-time vibe.
  • Nicki spends her time rolling around in the ocean as a mermaid, and towards the end magically transforms back into her human form to be on time for a date with Odell Beckham, Jr. from the New York Giants. Whoopee!
  • “If the Barbz and Arianators (fan bases for Nicki and Ariana, respectively) come for my neck, and I don’t come back from war..mark these as my last words…”

5. Ryan Coogler writes letter to fans of Black Panther.

  • As I mentioned earlier, a huuuuuge majority of this wrap-up is related to Black Panther. If you’ve made it this far without growing tired of me rambling on about the movie, I owe you big time!
  • Long story short, the brilliant director behind the movie, Ryan Coogler, penned an emotional letter to Black Panther fans and it just made every other negative thing in the world temporarily not matter. While the letter is a tad lengthy, Coogler basically expressed his gratitude while also admitting he didn’t expect the film to perform so well. The lesson here boys and girl is to NEVER underestimate yourself!

Here is the full letter from Coogler himself, posted from Marvel’s Instagram (@marvel):

I am struggling to find the words to express my gratitude at this moment, but I will try.

Filmmaking is a team sport. And our team was made up [of] amazing people from all over the world who believed in this story. Deep down we all hoped that people would come to see a film about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of a cast of people of African descent.

Never in a million years did we imagine that you all would come out this strong. It still humbles me to think that people care enough to spend their money and time watching our film- But to see people of all backgrounds wearing clothing that celebrates their heritage, taking pictures next to our posters with their friends and family, and sometimes dancing in the lobbies of theaters– often moved me and my wife to tears.

For the people who bought out theaters, who posted on social about how lit the film would be, bragged about our awesome cast, picked out outfits to wear, and who stood in line in theaters all over the world– all before seeing the film…

To the press who wrote about the film for folks who hadn’t yet seen it, and encouraged audiences to come out…

And to the young ones, who came out with their parents, with their mentors, and with their friends…

Thank you for giving our team of filmmakers the greatest gift: The opportunity to share this film, that we poured our hearts and souls into, with you.

Sincerely,

Ryan Coogler

Marvel’s “Black Panther” (spoiler free) review! #WakandaForever

Check out TheOriginalChatman’s spoiler-free review of “Black Panther.”

 Check out TheOriginalChatman’s S P O I L E R. FREE. review below!

As I left the theater earlier this evening, I heard the final words from some guy echo  behind me that Black Panther was “not too much” and “not too less.” Furthermore, he shared with his friend that the movie itself was “just right.” I’d be hard pressed to disagree.

Black Panther follows the events after the death of T’Chaka, leader to fictional African nation Wakanda. Wakanda disguises itself as a poor third-world country; however, within its secretive holographic barriers is a country more technologically advanced than the outside world. The country’s main resource, vibranium, is a metal that absorbs any kinetic energy vibrations into it. T’Challa, T’Chaka’s only son, follows lineage as the new Black Panther and new king to Wakanda, vowing to protect its land and people from outside sources.

Within minutes of the film’s opening, you’ll notice that Wakanda is visually stunning to experience on the screen. It’s such a beautiful setting you’ll forget it doesn’t actually exist. Furthermore, Marvel and director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale StationCreed) bring a whole new light surrounding Africa. Hollywood typically has a tradition of undermining the overall cultural aesthetic of Africa, hugely ignoring its customs and other cultural elements. From the wardrobe the actors wear to traditional dances and rituals resembling real African traditions, Coogler pays homage to a place often overlooked by others.

Aside from the visuals I gotta be honest and say….every. single. actor. DELIVERS! Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan‘s respective roles as T’Challa and Killmonger have ambitious motives. On one hand, T’Challa balances his duties as king as he deals with his own personal demons. On the other, Killmonger is quite possibly the first Marvel villain we feel sympathy for.

Let’s not forget the ladies also. Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o characters Oloye and Nakia are so badass that they damn near steal the show as members of T’Challa’s all-women security force, the Dora Milaje. Meanwhile Letitia Wright represents as Shuri, the tech-saavy teenage sister of T’Challa. These characters tell an important narrative, especially in the superhero genre. Black Panther provides an opportunity for the female cast members to shine outside of basic supporting roles or love interests.

Finally, there’s two points that briefly need to addressed.

  1. Black children can feel powerful, positive reinforcement when they are properly represented on the big screen. Ryan Coogler and Marvel do an amazing job of accomplishing this feat with this movie.
  2. On the surface, Black Panther is a superhero film. Yet it also serves as a strategically-placed reminder—which isn’t too politicized, so no worries! —  of the sociopolitical problems underprivileged black people continue to face in the world today.

Thanks for reading TheOriginalChatman’s™ review of Black Panther! Feel free to drop a comment or two below. Don’t forget that it’s #WakandaForever. Until next time!

P.S. Not a real Jay-Z quote, as far as I know. Anyways, check out the weekly wrap-up for the second week of February brought to you by TheOriginalChatman.

Mon. 2/5

1. Cozz’s new album Effected is on the way, so the Dreamville-affiliated rapper releases the album’s tracklist along with the release date.

  • While Top Dawg Entertainment (Kendrick Lamar, SZA) is tearing up the industry with its tours and imminent Hollywood takeover, the J.Cole-helmed label Dreamville is quietly making moves also.
  • Cozz’s new album Effected— a title paying homage to his first mixtape Cozz and Effect— will be available this Tuesday, February 13th. He’s already released two singles, “Badu” featuring Curren$y and “Ignorant Confidence.” Check out the album art below.

2. Donald Glover appears in the first trailer for “Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

  • Donald Glover is constantly balancing duties between music, film, and television like it’s nothing. No biggie, to be honest!
  • Originally, a teaser dropped on SuperBowl Sunday with the full trailer available for fan enjoyment the following day.
  • While Glover’s Lando Calrissian character doesn’t do much speaking in the Solo trailer, it’s assumed Glover supporting role will be one for the ages. Here’s the full trailer for the film. What does everyone think of the film’s trailer?

3. Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s video for “All the Stars” continues to build anticipation for Marvel’s Black Panther.

  • Can we skip over other movies for the rest of 2018 and crown Black Panther as the best film of all time? No? Yes? Is my geek showing? I know the movie hasn’t been released yet, but my expectations are already out of this world!
  • Dave Meyers and The Little Homies (Meyers and Kendrick Lamar himself) blessed us with the official music video for “All The Stars”, the lead single from Black Panther The Album.
  • In the video, Kendrick and SZA are seen surrounded by literal black panthers, an aesthetic of bright colors and a biblical-like landscape similar to Wakanda, the fictional setting from Black Panther. Check out the visually stunning and wonderfully illustrated video below.

4. Bruno Mars proposes that the NFL take place in Atlanta next year, and that the half-time acts be prominent hip-hop artists from the past and present.

  • Taking one step ahead of everyone, Bruno Mars boldly proposes via Twitter that the 2019 SuperBowl honor hip-hop by allowing prominent artists of the city play the half-time show.
  • “NFL, you have the opportunity to celebrate incredible Hip Hop Artist from Atlanta next year. Outkast, T.I., Gucci, Lil Jon, Jeezy, Jermaine Dupri just to name a few. it would be the best party Tv has ever seen!”
  • While hip-hop has long transitioned into the mainstream, I find it hard to believe the NFL will allow any of Atlanta’s rap gatekeepers that Bruno tweeted about to actually be there. Not because they are sub-par as artists/performers, it’s just that hip-hop and the NFL seem like an unlikely partnership moving forward in already divisive political climate we live in.

5. R&B/soul virtuoso Anderson .Paak promises a new album sometime this year!

  • It’s been two years since we’ve last received a solo project from Anderson .Paak.

  • Gucci Mane’s life story will soon be known to casual and die-hard fans of Gucci!
  • Earlier this week, it was reported that the rights to The Autobiography of Gucci Mane were bought by Paramount Pictures.
  • Before the news was official, Gucci strongly suggested his book-turned-movie deal via Twitter.

Eminem Calls On Beyoncé for “Walk On Water”

Eminem releases the Beyoncé-assisted track “Walk on Water” from his upcoming ninth album rumored to be titled “Revival”. Is the song HOT or not? Chime in the comments below!

Eminem and Beyoncé team up for “Walk on Water”, a song ripped from Em’s upcoming ninth album rumored to be titled “Revival.” Just as a heads up, the song is more of a ballad than Eminem’s Trump-bashing fiery freestyle he released at this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards. Lil Uzi Vert Teams Up With Nav for “Wanted You”

Lil Uzi and Nav (from the XO camp) team up on “Wanted You.” Is the track HOT or NOT? Sound off in the comments!

I’m gonna be honest…I may not be the biggest fan of Lil Uzi Vert; however, I must admit  that his album slaps in the whip now and then. Luv is Rage 2 charted at number one on the Billboard 200 with his hit song “XO Tour Llif3.” In addition to “XO Tour Llif3”, Uzi released his follow-up single “The Way Life Goes” which chronicles the same vein as “Tour Llif3”—a failed relationship.

Furthermore, with an assisted verse from Nicki Minaj, she helped Uzi take the song to new heights. Minaj took to Instagram to preview a snippet of her “The Way Life Goes” verse and bam—it’s now an official remix.

The charismatic Philly rapper isn’t slowing down. Uzi and XO artist Nav released “Wanted You” on Thursday night, a heavily auto-tuned track dedicated to a bitter relationship that shouldn’t have happened. Listen to both tracks below and sound off in the comments if they’re hot or not.

Sidebar: The sample from Uzi’s “The Way Life Goes” is from a 2015 song called “Landslide” by Oh Wonder, an R&B duo from the U.K. I’ve been bumpin’ their eponymous album and it’s pretty solid. Feel free to check it out!

21 Savage finally releases a visual for “Bank Account” which features a Mike Epps cameo. Check it out here on TheOriginalChatman.com

I got 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 cents in my bank account…in my bank account!”

21 Savage finally releases a visual for his summer smash hit “Bank Account” from his debut album, Issa. There’s a pretty awesome cameo in it too! Actor and comedian Mike Epps fits the bill for the “Bank Account” cameo and we see Mike pull no stops out for him just being naturally hilarious.

Long story short, Mike Epps is delivering a teddy bear to an office building while 21 Savage and his crew prepare for a heist–which ironically is inside the same building Mike within. Check out the visual below and let me know if you feel it or not.

Without spoiling the twist, this is definitely a clip that’s as hilarious as the shift is unexpected. It’s also just dope to see “Bank Account,” which was without a doubt one of the early picks from the album when it dropped, get a proper video treatment. It also shows different sides to 21’s character.

Watch the full video for “Bank Account” up above.

Kanye West Appears Onstage next to Kid Cudi in Chicago

TheOriginalChatman is back with all new content! I’ve decided to cover last night’s reunion between Kanye West and Kid Cudi during Cudi’s Chicago show on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2017.

Welcome back Yeezy!

As one of the world’s biggest Kanye West fans (don’t debate me either, guarantee you won’t win…), it brought me joy seeing ‘Ye appear onstage in Chicago next to Kid Cudi during Cudi’s show. Outside of random sightings, this is the first time we’ve seen ‘Ye actually perform. The pair performed Kanye’s Saint Pablo standout hit “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1.” Watch footage of the performance below.

Last November, the Chicago heavy-hitter indefinitely postponed his “Saint Pablo” tour which happened to be inflamed with controversy. From publicly endorsing Donald Trump to criticizing Jay-Z and Beyoncé during a slew of fiery onstage rants, the result for West left him hospitalized for exhaustion.

Chance the Rapper was an integral force in setting the Twittersphere in frenzy after tweeting, “Kid Cudi brought out Kanye in Chicago.”

Fingers crossed 2018 will be the year of more YEEZY SZN (“Yeezy” SZN)!

Pablo Escobar’s Brother Is Suing Netflix Over ‘Narcos’ For $1 Billion!

Roberto Escobar vs. Netflix for the winning bid of $1 billion–will Netflix have to hand it over?

Imagine having one of the most popular shows on the biggest streaming service on the planet. Next, imagine someone wanting to short you out of one BILLION dollars because they ask you to put some respek! on their name.

Unfortunately, this is a real scenario with real people. Pablo Escobar’s brother Roberto de Jesus Escobar Gaviria is threatening Netflix and their popular crime-drama series Narcos with a copyright claim for $1 billion—-that’s billion with a B!

According to documents obtained by the Hollywood Reporter (feel free to glance it over for the specifics), Escobar’s brother filed a lawsuit demanding the large sum of money for using the Medellín cartel founder’s name and story without permission from himself or the family.

Narcos
Wagner Moura as ‘Narcos’ season 1 and 2 protagonist, Pablo Escobar. Photo image from official ‘Narcos’ Facebook page.

Being the boss that he is, or once was, Roberto claims “it is very dangerous” to film any movies in Colombia without the family’s blessing. Asking Netflix to ante up $1 billion is an extremely bold move. Not one to sell himself short, Escobar expressed that he wants the show to be closed down all together if he’s not awarded the $1 billion he’s asking for.

Do you think Roberto Escobar has a right to tell Netflix to pay up? Sound off in the comments below!

Kingsman: The Golden Circle–REVIEW

I just came home from seeing Kingsman: The Golden Circle. What follows is a honest spoiler-free review of the film starting Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges and more.

21616050_832456323598415_2218350933643104829_n

Similar to music, sports, or anything else pop culture related— sequels usually (but not every time) suck. However, Kingsman: The Golden Circle serves as a direct hit to its predecessor, Kingsman: The Secret Service. What makes the franchise so amazing is that it stands out from other spy film franchises such as 007 or The Bourne Identity. Although these franchises are great in their own way, the Kingsman relies on a less serious tone while also packing a punch with its brand of humor and action style.

Here’s a quick synopsis from IMDB:

When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, the Kingsman’s journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US. These two elite secret organizations must band together to defeat a common enemy.

The main character is named “Eggsy”, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when new ones were woven into the story with names such as “Tequila”, “Champagne”, “Whiskey” or “Ginger Ale.”

In The Secret Service, character development was a necessity to push the plot forward. Regarding The Golden Circle—not so much. In my opinion, backstories or any type of character motivation was lazily meshed through for the sake of focusing on the action.

Also, Julianne Moore as the villainous “Poppy” was a weird choice that didn’t sit right with me–but I ended up enjoying the movie and didn’t put too much thought into it as the film progressed.

Be sure to check out Kingsman: The Golden Circle sometime this weekend. Let me know what y’all think!

Rap Lyrics Land A Georgia Middle School School Teacher in Hot Water Over An Assignment

A Georgia middle school teacher is in hot water this week after using Kodak Black lyrics for a school assignment. Read more on TheOriginalChatman. Don’t forget to like, share, comment and mostly importantly–subscribe!

I remember waaaaaay back in fifth grade, my English teacher Mrs. Fairman (at least I think that was her name!) handed us a in-class assignment with lyrics from Eminem’s classic fight song, “Lose Yourself.” I can’t quite remember the specific instructions of the assignment, but I vividly remember reading the lyrics in class thinking that at the time she was probably the coolest teacher I’ve had in my adolescent life.

Despite the politics regarding the current landscape of rap, one thing fuels rap music more than anything. Lyrics! While some rap artists don’t rely heavily on super lyrical content, there’s no doubt that lyrics can be a powerful force to be  reckoned with—if used correctly.

This was the intention for a Bethune Middle School teacher in DeKalb County, Georgia when she asked students to put a positive spin on the song lyrics of “Drowning” for a school assignment. The song—which peaked #38 on Billboard’s Hot 100 earlier this summer—is originally A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie‘s but includes a feature from controversial Florida rapper Kodak Black.

Kodak Black
Image via Kodak Black’s official Facebook page.

According to ABC Atlanta-affiliate station WSBTV, the lyrics in question stem from Kodak Black’s verse.

I ain’t Jamaican, b*tch I’m Haitian, but I got them shottas

She call me daddy, but I ain’t her motherf*cking father

Crishana Wright, a mother of a student at Bethune, spoke out about the assignment to WSBTV. “It was really against everything that I try to teach them.”

The school’s superintendent released a statement calling the assignment “inappropriate, unacceptable and contrary to our standards.” Furthermore, they revealed to WSB that the teacher responsible for the assignment “has been removed from the classroom and will be held for such poor judgment.”

Although I firmly believe hip-hop can be used as learning tool, my biggest concern here is that the teacher failed to realize young minds, especially those of sixth graders, are extremely delicate with the information and knowledge we fill their heads with. There are several examples the teacher could’ve used to relate to her students with.

Thoughts? Comments? Questions?

Feel free to drop them below!

John Mayer Attempted to Shoot His Shot with Nicki Minaj–Did He Land It?

I’m pretty sure a lot of guys—celebs and non-celebs alike—have tried shooting their shot with the self-proclaimed Queen of Rap, Nicki Minaj. I mean who could blame them, right?

Recently, a not-so-regular guy by the name of John Mayer confessed via his Twitter that he spends “an inordinate amount of time” thinking if Nicki would love him or crush him. Not necessarily in those words, but you get the gist. Check out Mayer’s tweet from Friday night. According to an article from Complex, he’s a changed man regarding his thoughts on interracial dating that go all the way back to 2010.

If Mayer and Minaj actually were a thing in the foreseeable future, it could possibly jeopardize her friendship with Katy Perry, seeing as how Perry and Mayer dated for a while a few years back.

Celebrities going for each other may not exactly be breaking news; however I though we could all use a break from the bleak reality of hurricanes and other political mishaps from our government.

Will Smith Says Barrack Obama Gave Him the Green Light to Portray Him In A Movie

According to Will Smith, Barrack Obama gave him the green light to play him in a future movie role. It’d be a hit for sure!

I don’t know about y’all, but I definitely miss Barrack as our president. He exemplified the embodiment of grown man swag–plus he was the coolest president ever on so many levels! It’s only a matter of time before we are blessed with a movie focused on his life as the 44th POTUS.

While not currently official, Will Smith shared with The Late Late Show host James Corden that Barrack Obama granted Smith the permission to portray him in a movie role in the future. It was during Tuesday’s (August 8th) debut episode of Corden’s wildly successful Carpool Karaoke segment—which is now a stand-alone show on Apple Music—in which Smith jokingly revealed the news.

“I talked to Barack about it. He told me that he felt confident that I had the ears for that role.” Watch the first Carpool Karaoke episode below!

Kelly Rowland and Syd to Collab for Rowland’s Next Album

Kelly Rowland and Syd to Collab for Rowland’s Next Album. Read more info on TheOriginalChatman. As always like, share, comment, and provide feedback!

The beautiful and extremely talented Kelly Rowland hasn’t dropped a new album since 2013’s, Talk A Good Game. However, she still has her foot deep within her music.

Recently on a Beats 1 radio show, Rowland discussed her upcoming music, and even mentioned a collaboration with someone in the industry whose been gaining a lot of traction lately. The collaborator will be none other than Syd, the lead singer of The Internet (the Odd Future affiliated soul-R&B band). Apparently Kelly is a huge fan of Syd’s voice and her music.

According to Rowland, she thinks everything about her voice “is just so effortless”  which allows her to be sucked in while Syd sings. She used the hit Internet song “Girl” as a reference to express her fandom for the leading lady.

Besides her love of all things Syd, Kelly discussed the delay in new music while also dabbling on finding a neutral ground between youth and older age. “I’m in this really glorious time where I’m receiving a lot of information and I feel like I have to give that back out too.”

I’m sure once Kelly and Syd release their collab together, our ears will be blessed with amazing music. Also, minor spoiler alert! On last night’s episode of HBO’s Insecure, Syd made a cameo on the show! I was lowkey excited, yall!

According to a video posted to his official Facebook page, Vin Diesel will be part of a live Fast and Furious world tour. Could you imagine jumping from car to car while in motion? Or driving exotic cars through buildings!?

You probably won’t get the chance to jump in a car and experience the stunts firsthand; however, once the tour comes to an arena near you, you’ll be able to witness the potential hype surrounding the tour. Watch Diesel make the announcement in the video below.

“I am in New York, believe it or not, and we are filming something that is going to be pretty state of the art,” said Diesel, “something no one’s ever seen before, which is a live show. I think it’s first going to be showed at the O2 Arena in London, but it’s going to go all over the world and we’re really excited about it.”

Variety says that the live world tour will be produced by Universal Studios. The tour reportedly is slated to recreate some of the biggest stunts in the history of the series.

The live tour details are still under wraps. Be sure to check it out January 2018 in an arena near you.

Big Boi Blesses A 5-Year-Old Paralyzed Child With A Gift

Big Boi Blesses A 5-Year-Old Paralyzed Child With A Gift

Antwan Big Boi” Patton, one-half of legendary rap duo Outkast, has done a good deed that is enough to warm anyone’s heart.

Back in April, five-year-old Abriya Ellison was shot by an unknown shooter while playing in her bouncy castle. Although Ellison survived the tragic incident, it left her paralyzed from the waist down. Once hearing of the Georgia native’s story, Big Boi began to reach out to Ellison and her family.

Abriya was gifted with a bulldog puppy that will be trained to be her service dog, courtesy of Big Boi’s Pitfall Kennels.

WSB Atlanta asked what she’d name her new puppy enthusiastically shouting, “King!”

The Atlanta news outlet also mentions Big Boi and his brother James will cover the animal’s vet care. Meanwhile, Patton will pay Ellison’s GoFundMe needs while also giving her a handicapped-accessible bathroom.

Despite what happened to her, the rapper took note of Abriya’s positive spirit and energy in an on-camera interview with WSB Atlanta.“She’s been through a lot and to see how strong she is now, that was just like ‘Oh my goodness.’ She’s definitely inspiring and it just touched our heart, so we’re just trying to do what we can do to help.”

Will Packer and Aaron McGruder To Develop Alt-History Series for Amazon: ‘Black America’

Will Packer and Aaron McGruder To Develop Alt-History Series for Amazon: ‘Black America’

I’ve never watched HBO’s Game of Thrones, but after last week’s news on the Internet about GoT creators developing an alt-historical based show called Confederate in which the southern states seceded and slavery is legal, it may be difficult for me to get into Thrones now.

In what seems like a direct response to Confederate, Will Packer (Think Like A Man franchises, Ride AlongGirls Trip) and Aaron McGruder (best known for his comic strip turned Adult Swim series The Boondocks) are developing Black America for Amazon Studios.

In the same arena as Confederate, Black America also serves as an alt-history series where newly freed African-Americans create a sovereign nation called New Colonia from the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama as reparations from slavery.

Previously under wraps, the Black America team decided to reveal the project’s premise. According to Deadline, HBO’s announcement of Confederate was the right time for Packer and McGruder to move forward with their brainchild of a project. “It felt this was the appropriate time to make sure that audiences and the creative community knew that there was a project that preexisted and we are pretty far down the road with it,” Packer told Deadline. Packer even says there are few black Americans today who haven’t considered the concept of reparation.

Furthermore, we can thank activist April Reign (the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag creator) for spearheading the #NoConfederate trending Twitter hashtag.

What are everyone’s thoughts on Confederate and Black America, respectively?

HBO’s ‘Insecure’ Has Been Renewed for a Season 3!

Despite it’s current second season run, fans will be happy HBO’s Insecure has been renewed for season 3! The hit comedy will also compete with fellow comedy series Ballers, which has also been renewed for a fourth season.

Straight from the Twitter of Issa Rae— we’ll be getting a season three of her hit HBO comedy series Insecure!

Although currently in its second season run, this is great news for those of us who are still undecided as to whether we’re #TeamIssa or #TeamLawrence.

Insecure follows the narrative of Issa and Molly, her best friend, as they navigate their relationships at work and in the love department. The premise of season 2 we witness the rocky relationship (or what is left of it) after her breakup with boyfriend Lawrence who has already moved on yet still has lingering feelings for his ex.

HBO has also renewed Ballers for a fourth season, the Dwayne Johnson-helmed project which is currently in its third season.

Movie Review: Girls Trip

Check out The Original Chatman’s review of Girls Trip!

Ever since the inception of The Hangover franchise, there has been a slow yet steady rise of films in which we witness a group of friends get into some sh*t they can’t get themselves out of; however by the film’s end, the main conflict is resolved. After watching Girls Trip tonight, I can definitely say this—- Girls Trip is far from being another Hangover (no shade)!

First of all, the chemistry of  the protagonists is amazing. Jada Pinkett-SmithQueen LatifahRegina King, and Tiffany Haddish portray four college friends who reunite at the annual Essence Festival after five years of not seeing one another.

Lisa (Pinkett-Smith), Ryan (King), Sasha (Latifah), and Dina (Haddish) were sorority sisters back in the day part of their own little crew called the “Flossy Posse.” For the most part, every comedy in the same lane as Girls Trip has similar character tropes that are played out (i.e. the outlandish comic relief, the serious one, the peacemaker, and the one friend that has beef with the main character).

What makes Girls Trip refreshing is the generic chemistry between the four ladies. Most buddy films attempt to create chemistry between co-stars that comes off as hurried. The cast of Girls Trip deliver as friends in real life.

Additionally, each lead reveals a level of vulnerability often not reserved for comedies. Within the first ten minutes, comedian Tiffany Haddish’s star-power is apparent and her role demands attention that is careful not to diminish the storylines of the other characters.

Finally, four black female leads in a movies is super dope! Despite more a few more dick jokes than I could handle, Girls Trip is a trip you’ll definitely enjoy from start to finish!

[WATCH]: Kendrick Lamar Drops Rihanna-Assisted Video for “LOYALTY.”

Kendrick Lamar drops another visual from his double-platinum album, DAMN. From “HUMBLE.” to “DNA.” and “ELEMENT.” to “LOYALTY.” is there a common theme within Kendrick’s most recent videos? Watch “LOYALTY.” and see for yourself.

Fresh off the heels of bringing out J.Cole and Chance the Rapper to his Detroit and Chicago shows, Kendrick Lamar continues to keep us tuned into his every move.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXEad7kF6E8/?taken-by=kendricklamar

Although currently on tour promoting his most recent release DAMN, Kendrick continued to satisfy his fans by releasing the visual for the Rihanna-assisted track “LOYALTY.” As I mentioned in an older post covering his video for “ELEMENT.”, most Kendrick Lamar visuals have to be watched at least twice to understand the themes behind the music.

So imagine this: Ninjas (or at least I think what I think may be ninjas). Scantily-clad women representing temptation. Metal sharks under concrete road pavement. If you’re lost, I don’t blame you. Let’s break it down a bit further. Using the comments section for some sense of understanding (which is something I should do less of..unfortunately!), my interpretation is that each of these elements represents Kendrick trying to stay not only loyal to his woman (played by Rihanna), but to himself. Kendrick recognizes the more fame he achieves within the music industry, the more likely his moral values are inclined to disappear. The lyrics even speak for themselves. Watch the video below and let me know what yall think!

Kendrick Lamar and Nas Discuss the Swizz Beatz-Timbaland Beat Battle

Kendrick Lamar and Nas Discuss the Swizz Beatz-Timbaland Beat Battle. Between the two producer giants, who do y’all think is #WithTheSmoke?

At its forefront, not only is hip-hop a young man’s game, it’s also a competitive sport in which rap adversaries go head to head with bars—the end result guiding us (the fans) to determine which is the best emcee.

Although emcees fighting for “the throne” in rap is nothing new, a beat battle between producers is something worth the surrounding hype. I’m not necessarily certain if beat battles have been around; however, a match-up between the legendary Swizz Beatz and Timbaland will definitely go down in the rap history books.

Just a couple weeks ago (July 14), Swizz challenged Timbo the King to a beat battle. The challenge was offered during a Hot 97 promo run for the upcoming Mayweather-McGregor fight.

Timbaland has since accepted the battle leaving both producers to prep for the epic battle via their Instagram accounts.

Both super producers have campaigned the hottest names in rap— such as Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Nas— about the outcome of the epic battle. Swizz caught up with Nas in a studio somewhere in which the Queensbridge legend calls Swizz and Timbo, “two top tier n-ggas going at it.” Nas didn’t give a clear answer on whose side he’s reppin’ but he encouraged the beat battle as “what the game needs.”

“Y’all both my brothers, so I just want to watch it go down,” he continues.

On the other side of the scale, Timbaland posted a video of Swizz chopping it up with Kendrick and Soulo. While Kendrick almost speaks a victory for Swizz into existence, he bounces back quickly by changing the subject. Watch what Kendrick says to Swizz regarding the battle and determine for yourself who Kendrick’s rollin’ with.

Swizz and Timbo just need to give us a date for this battle already. Both super producers are in it to win, no doubt. Whose everyone rooting for in the battle?

PARTYNEXTDOOR Reveals Insane Collabs via Twitter

PARTYNEXTDOOR Reveals Insane Collabs via Twitter

PARTYNEXTDOOR practically does it all when it comes to music.

The OVO singer has penned hits for huge names such as DJ Khaled and Rihanna, meanwhile collaborating with everyone from Travis Scott to his frequent collaborator and OVO boss, Drake.

In case you missed it, on Thursday (July 20th), PND shook up the Twittersphere when he revealed three artists we’ve never seen him align with. The artists in question are Ne-Yo and T-Pain. Although trailblazers in their own right, I think the biggest name drop of them all is a future collab with Yeezy aka Kanye West. It’s been reported all over the Internet that Kanye is secretly working on a new album; however, no word on the street has popped out for a release date.

Without a doubt, Party and Kanye’s song (whenever the two stars decide to drop it) will be a hit in the making. Check out PND’s tweetstorm below.

Besides the release of Colours 2 earlier this year, PND  has remained quiet dropping his own music. Once the new stuff drops, he’ll for sure be back to being the talk of the town.

Beyonce’s Wax Figure Still Has People Pressed!

Beyonce’s Wax Figure Still Has People Pressed!

Happy Saturday everyone!

It’s no secret that Beyoncé is pretty much a big deal. She sneezes and literally the whole world will bless her. No shade.

https://giphy.com/gifs/xTiN0vyCvNjFJbApc4/html5

However, the shade was thrown heavily on the Internet on Wednesday (July 19th) when photos of a wax figure of Queen Bey was revealed. The wax figure, located in Madame Tussaud’s New York museum, received a slew of social media criticism after saying the statue looked whitewashed and didn’t capture the essence of the Queen.

Within the next day, Madame Tussaud’s removed the original statue claiming the issue was due to “the styling and lighting of her figure.”

On a personal note, I remember going to Madame Tussaud’s in Orlando a year ago, and the wax statue I saw definitely had zero resemblance to Beyoncé. Unlike the Beyhive, I wasn’t particularly offended; however, the power of her fans is TOO REAL. Madame Tussaud’s New York has since replace the criticized wax figure and updated it with a better one.

Peep the new statue here.
