Rap Lyrics Land A Georgia Middle School School Teacher in Hot Water Over An Assignment

A Georgia middle school teacher is in hot water this week after using Kodak Black lyrics for a school assignment. Read more on TheOriginalChatman. Don’t forget to like, share, comment and mostly importantly–subscribe!

I remember waaaaaay back in fifth grade, my English teacher Mrs. Fairman (at least I think that was her name!) handed us a in-class assignment with lyrics from Eminem’s classic fight song, “Lose Yourself.” I can’t quite remember the specific instructions of the assignment, but I vividly remember reading the lyrics in class thinking that at the time she was probably the coolest teacher I’ve had in my adolescent life.

Despite the politics regarding the current landscape of rap, one thing fuels rap music more than anything. Lyrics! While some rap artists don’t rely heavily on super lyrical content, there’s no doubt that lyrics can be a powerful force to be  reckoned with—if used correctly.

This was the intention for a Bethune Middle School teacher in DeKalb County, Georgia when she asked students to put a positive spin on the song lyrics of “Drowning” for a school assignment. The song—which peaked #38 on Billboard’s Hot 100 earlier this summer—is originally A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie‘s but includes a feature from controversial Florida rapper Kodak Black.

According to ABC Atlanta-affiliate station WSBTV, the lyrics in question stem from Kodak Black’s verse.

I ain’t Jamaican, b*tch I’m Haitian, but I got them shottas

She call me daddy, but I ain’t her motherf*cking father

Crishana Wright, a mother of a student at Bethune, spoke out about the assignment to WSBTV. “It was really against everything that I try to teach them.”

The school’s superintendent released a statement calling the assignment “inappropriate, unacceptable and contrary to our standards.” Furthermore, they revealed to WSB that the teacher responsible for the assignment “has been removed from the classroom and will be held for such poor judgment.”

Although I firmly believe hip-hop can be used as learning tool, my biggest concern here is that the teacher failed to realize young minds, especially those of sixth graders, are extremely delicate with the information and knowledge we fill their heads with. There are several examples the teacher could’ve used to relate to her students with.

Netflix’s “The Get Down” Has Been Cancelled

Netflix’s “The Get Down” Has Been Cancelled! What are everyone’s thought about this?

For those of you who haven’t heard by now… the ground-breaking hip-hop origin storytelling series The Get Down has been cancelled!

Deadline was the first to report the news.

Baz Luhrmann, famous for 1996’s Romeo + Juliet, 2001’s Moulin Rouge, and 2013’s The Great Gatsby explained in a lengthy Facebook post why the series won’t be returning for a new season. Luhrmann confirmed the news when he expressed the show being “unlikely” to go back into production.

Although he poured a lot of love and energy into this project, he also reveals he had to be true to himself. “The simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life.”

Read the complete statement from Baz below.

Just the entire first season of The Get Down, which was broken into two parts, was reportedly the most expensive Netflix show ever, totally around a flashy price of $120 million.

Kendrick’s “DAMN.” Album is Certified Platinum!

Kendrick’s “DAMN.” Album is Certified !

There’s nothing Kung-Fu Kenny isn’t capable of of, as he slices up the competition again this week!

According to Interscope Records, Kendrick Lamar‘s DAMN. reached platinum status on Thursday (May 5th).

Interscope broke the news via their Twitter yesterday, while the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) declared Kendrick’s fourth effort as certified platinum less than a month (!!!) since its April 14th release. Lamar’s hot streak is still red-hot with astoundingly consecutive accomplishments.

Let’s recap all of Kendrick’s most recent accolades:

  • DAMN. is the first album of 2017 to go platinum
  • All 14 tracks appeared on the Billboard Hot 100
  • DAMN.  sold more than 600,000 units the first week, beating Drake’s More Life opening weeks sales by 100,000 units

The videos for “Humble” and “DNA.” are carving out more success for Kendrick too.

K. Dot torched the Coachella festival as a headliner this year— so something tells me we have yet to get the best of him as he prepares for The DAMN. Tour. The tour will feature D.R.A.M. and Travis Scott. Check out the dates below. Tickets can be purchased here.

Spotify and Genius Bring Forth “Behind the Lyrics”

Genius and Spotify’s “Behind the Lyrics” explains song lyrics through the eyes of the artist.

Often times more than not, we find ourselves looking up lyrics to our favorite songs by our favorite artists. However; we may be unaware of the artists’ true intent behind a certain lyric. Genius, the media knowledge company that hosts a community of users annotating lyrics taps into Spotify for a huge collaboration. Their collaboration is in the form of an app called “Behind the Lyrics.”

With their “Behind the Lyrics” feature backed by both companies coming to Android, hip-hop fans can satisfy their need for knowledge behind any song. Originally introduced to iPhone iOS last year, the program was called “Fact Tracks” in which users where given artist anecdotes as the music streamed.

Alternative-R&B artists Khalid celebrates the Android expansion by sharing why he believes in Behind the Lyrics.

Twitter via @thegreatkhalid

In an interview with HipHopDX, Khalid says, “You listen to a record, and you interpret it in your own way. But with this, you can see what the artist felt. ‘Maybe it means this.’ Music can mean anything you want.”

Spotify users can listen to the “Behind The Lyrics: Hip Hop” and “Today’s Top Hits” playlists to kick off the new Spotify and Genius collaboration.
