Movie Review: Girls Trip

Check out The Original Chatman’s review of Girls Trip!

Ever since the inception of The Hangover franchise, there has been a slow yet steady rise of films in which we witness a group of friends get into some sh*t they can’t get themselves out of; however by the film’s end, the main conflict is resolved. After watching Girls Trip tonight, I can definitely say this—- Girls Trip is far from being another Hangover (no shade)!

First of all, the chemistry of  the protagonists is amazing. Jada Pinkett-SmithQueen LatifahRegina King, and Tiffany Haddish portray four college friends who reunite at the annual Essence Festival after five years of not seeing one another.

Lisa (Pinkett-Smith), Ryan (King), Sasha (Latifah), and Dina (Haddish) were sorority sisters back in the day part of their own little crew called the “Flossy Posse.” For the most part, every comedy in the same lane as Girls Trip has similar character tropes that are played out (i.e. the outlandish comic relief, the serious one, the peacemaker, and the one friend that has beef with the main character).

What makes Girls Trip refreshing is the generic chemistry between the four ladies. Most buddy films attempt to create chemistry between co-stars that comes off as hurried. The cast of Girls Trip deliver as friends in real life.

Additionally, each lead reveals a level of vulnerability often not reserved for comedies. Within the first ten minutes, comedian Tiffany Haddish’s star-power is apparent and her role demands attention that is careful not to diminish the storylines of the other characters.

Finally, four black female leads in a movies is super dope! Despite more a few more dick jokes than I could handle, Girls Trip is a trip you’ll definitely enjoy from start to finish!
