#ICYMI: Happy Belated Bornday to the Greatest Of Our Time–Kendrick Lamar!

Kendrick Lamar Just Turned 30! What are your top 5 favorite songs from his catalog and why?

I know I’ma whole day late, but I have to wish one of my favorite artists out right now a huge Happy 30th Birthday–to Kendrick Lamar! You don’t know me personally; however, I can honestly say  I’ve felt every word you put into every lyric. K.Dot…you changed the game for the better by putting everyone on their toes with this rap sh-t!

J.Chatman aka TheOriginalChatman

To celebrate Kendrick’s/K.Dot’s/Kung-Fu Kenny’s 30th birthday, here’s a list of my top 5 favorite songs by him—in no particular order, mind you.

Kendrick’s ode to killing your favorite rapper is a classic. It was on this particular song where he used the double-time flow he would soon perfect on various songs and other projects in the future.

2. “B-tch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” (Section.80)

*screams “BITCH DON’T KILL MY VIBE!” excitedly and carefree in the middle of a conversation*

3. “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” (good kid, m.A.a.d. city)

A lot of his best songs are taken from personal experiences growing up in Compton, CA. Kendrick is no stranger to story telling on his albums–but this one is so important because of the perspective used to illustrate Kendrick’s childhood trauma in a dangerous environment. If you wanted to start listening to Kendrick now, I’d recommend you start with this song!

4. “m.A.a.d. city” (good kid, m.A.a.d. city)

“YAWK YAWK YAWK YAAAAWK!”

Enough said.

5. “Money Trees” (good kid, m.A.a.d. city)

The sample. The hook. The verse from fellow TDE member Jay Rock. Virtually everything about this song—following adolescent Kendrick’s pursuit of money as a means to escape poverty—captures Kendrick’s ability to translate his life story and transform it into someone else’s story.

Jay Z Used Twitter To Salute His Favorite Artists

Jay Z Used Twitter To Salute His Favorite Artists

Jay Z is a man of many words—with the exception of Twitter. Jay rarely uses his Twitter, so when he does, it is viewed as a special occasion.

On Thursday (June 15), Hov released a string of tweets giving a huge nod to his favorite artists—new and old alike. The tweets followed his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

As a 47-year-old rapper-turned-mogul, we could all assume he has an understanding knowledge of Twitter; however, Hov admitted his thoughts were cluttered as he couldn’t figure out the reply button. He reeled us back in promising he wasn’t drunk.

Check the tweets below!

And then there’s more….

The fact that his wife, the great Queen B, and Obama both get a honorable mention as rappers…priceless!

Hov is the greatest of all time for this. Who else do yall think deserves to be inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame?

Will Childish Gambino Make Any More Albums?

Will Childish Gambino Make Any More Albums?

How many actors in Hollywood have successfully done what Childish Gambino (real name Donald Glover) has done in their careers?

Don’t get me wrong…Hollywood is full of actors that dedicate themselves to several crafts outside of acting; however, none of them have had a strong cultural impact like Glover and his stage persona, Childish Gambino.

This past weekend, Gambino performed at The Governor’s Ball Music Festival, in which he made the announcement that Governor’s Ball is the only show he’s doing this year. Although that was a mildly exciting statement from ‘Bino, he saved the big announcement for the end of his show.

Naturally at one of the summer’s biggest music fests, Gambino played “Redbone” for the audience. However, it was the way he lead himself into the song that was dope in my opinion.  He used the “What ‘Redbone’ would sound like…” meme to incorporate the song into his setlist.

After finishing his setlist, he used the final moments of his time to tell the audience, “I’ll see you for the last Gambino album” which lead several audience members to scream “What!?” in disbelief.

For all things considered, it’s no huge surprise Donald is stepping away from making music. From being cast in major Hollywood productions such as the Lion King live-action remake and as a young Lando Calrissian in a Hans Solo Star Wars, and being all hands on-deck with FX’s Atlanta AND being a father sometime last year—music should take a backseat for him.

To be honest, I’d be content with just one final Gambino album–only if it’s done right!

Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters Face Copyright Infringement Due To Use of Tupac Photos On Their Products

Forever 21, Urban Outfitters Face Copyright Infringement Using Unauthorized Tupac Photos

It’s no doubt that the legacy of Tupac will live on forever. From his music, to the brash truth he utilized in his interviews, to his cultural influences in and outside of hip-hop, Tupac lives on through us.

Furthermore, Tupac‘s legacy thrives thru merchandise featuring his likeness.

Recently, two major retail companies have landed themselves in hot water for doing that. This past Wednesday (May 31), Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters were handed a copyright infringement lawsuit by photographer Danny Clinch. Clinch claims that both retailers and various third parties such as Amaru Merchandising (Tupac Shakur’s official merchandise licensing company) used his photos of the late rapper to create products without his consent.

Clinch’s photo of Tupac landed on a 1996 cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Clinch is asking to be accurately compensated for use of his photos on the products; meanwhile asking that any remaining inventory to be destroyed.

This wasn’t the first time Forever 21 faced copyright infringement (i.e. ripping of Kanye’s “Saint Pablo” merch and Rihanna’s Fenty Puma line).

Should Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters run up a check to Clinch, or nah?

Tyrese Continues To Tease Us With A Potential “Baby Boy” Sequel

Tyrese Continues To Tease Us With A Potential “Baby Boy” Sequel

Some movies shouldn’t have sequels…for a good reason too! As iconic the movie Baby Boy is, I honestly believe the world can go without a sequel. How we are feeling doesn’t stop Tyrese for still pushing for a sequel to come to the light.

Here’s a quick timeline of everything Tyrese has said about the possible sequel.

April 30th: Tyrese showed us an Insta-vid of the famous Baby Boy scene of Jody and Yvette arguing as they walk down the stairs outside Yvette’s apartment.

May 1st: The hashtag #BabyBoy2ComingOfAge was captioned under a picture of a car that resembles Yvette’s from the movie. Tyrese shouted out John Singleton, while challenging his Instagram followers to quote their three favorite lines from the original movie.

Today, in a since-deleted Instagram post, Tyrese continued to egg us on with a movie poster of all the characters from the first film. On the poster, Taraji P. HensonVing Rhames and Snoop Dogg made appearances. How can everyone make a return to the film if Rodney, Snoop Dogg’s character, died in the first movie?

Jamie Foxx Dominates the “Musical Genre Challenge”

t’s no secret that Jamie Foxx is an extremely versatile and talented guy. Although Jamie began a career in comedy, he was fortunate enough to branch out and dominate the acting world while dabbling with music over the years also.

Recently on Thursday (May 25), Jamie appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote his new game show, Beat Shazam–in which he will be the host for the show. Jamie and Fallon battled it out on a regular Fallon segment called “Musical Genre Challenge.”

“Musical Genre Challenge” puts Fallon against his guests in a battle to sing popular songs in various genres. For example, Fallon belted out a ’60s rock version of the “Bad and Boujee” hit by Migos. Despite Jimmy’s impressive attempt to flip “Bad and Boujee”, it was Jamie who stole the show away. In the end, Fallon accepted defeat calling Foxx  “the most talented man on earth” by the end of the segment.

Watch Jamie absolutely kill it in the Musical Genre Challenge Below. He committed to a Broadway musical version of Baha Men’s “Who Let The Dogs Out?” and an opera rendition of Rihanna‘s “B-tch Better Have My Money.”
