‘Empire’ Season 4 Recap [with MINOR spoilers]

Season 4 of Empire premiered last check. Check out TheOriginalChatman’s review below. Warning…MAJOR spoilers!

FOX’s hit music drama Empire returned Wednesday (Sept. 27) switching time slots with its sister show, Star. Was the season 4 premiere a hit or a miss? Check out TheOriginalChatman’s review below! WA R N I N G ⇔ spoilers below!

First of all, I’m forever grateful for the “previously on…” recaps before every episode. They’ve been doing it seasons prior; however, the season 3 recap was much needed as I was unprepared for the somewhat emotional rollercoaster season 4 premiere laid out for us.

The season 3 finale went out with a bang..literally! Surviving a nasty explosion in Las Vegas last season lead to Luscious experiencing a mild case of amnesia. With his loss of memory came along empty memories of family, Empire, or life before the explosion.

That all changes when Luscious returns home from the hospital (in style being chauffeured inside a stretch limo— mean this is Empire after all!) with his attractive and extremely “hands-on” doctor Claudia, played by Demi Moore. More on Demi’s character later.

Terrance Howard and Taraji P. Henson returning as Cookie and Luscious for Wednesday’s season 4 premiere. Image credit goes to Chuck Hodes for FOX.

For starters, his role as an amnesiac seemed realistic for someone who survived a near-death experience. Nevertheless, I couldn’t shake the feeling that deep down he’s faking it for some hidden ultimatum. Why? Take for example the outside dinner scene near the pool. While Cookie, Andre, and Jamal took turns walking him thru the missing gaps of his memories, as expected it was youngest son Hakeem who pushed his father too far.

Storming away from the dinner table like a spoiled child, Luscious threatened to jump in the pool due to the family scaring him. The once mighty Luscious Lyon reacted like a baby cub. This scene altogether was the weakest; but the episode improves over the hour.

Furthermore, season after season, Luscious Lyon has illustrated himself as the ruthless villain constantly turning his back on family for personal gain. It’s quite understandable why I’ve jumped to this conclusion.

Dr. Claudia Takes The “Hands On” Approach Too Seriously

I’ma keep it short and sweet. Dr. Claudia and Luscious were more than likely knocking boots while on his road to recovery from amnesia. Watch how closely the two interact throughout the episode. I’d shoot my shot at my doctor if she looked as good as Demi Moore too! I ain’t mad at cha playa!

Remember #Cooscious?

How could we forget about #Cooscious (half Cookie, half Luscious)? Despite their various relationship road blocks, Cookie and Luscious were finally back on track after he poured his undying love out to her moments before the accident.  Cookie’s been one tough cookie (sorry for the lame pun!) for years, yet we see a softer side of her upon Luscious’s return. Hopefully we’ll see a reunion of love between the troubled yer star-crossed lovers.

The Lyons vs. The DuBois

Not to be ever underestimated, the first hip-hop of family was almost torn apart  last season as they met their match with The DuBois family. I think it’s great watching two powerful families go for each other’s throats and reach for the win—all for the respect of each family’s name of course. Diana DuBois, played by the legendary talent Phylicia Rashad, makes a return as an antagonist unlike ever before in the history of Empire.

The season 4 premiere didn’t seem quite as exciting as I hoped, but I have faith it’ll pick up over the next twelve episodes.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle–REVIEW

I just came home from seeing Kingsman: The Golden Circle. What follows is a honest spoiler-free review of the film starting Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges and more.

21616050_832456323598415_2218350933643104829_n

Similar to music, sports, or anything else pop culture related— sequels usually (but not every time) suck. However, Kingsman: The Golden Circle serves as a direct hit to its predecessor, Kingsman: The Secret Service. What makes the franchise so amazing is that it stands out from other spy film franchises such as 007 or The Bourne Identity. Although these franchises are great in their own way, the Kingsman relies on a less serious tone while also packing a punch with its brand of humor and action style.

Here’s a quick synopsis from IMDB:

When their headquarters are destroyed and the world is held hostage, the Kingsman’s journey leads them to the discovery of an allied spy organization in the US. These two elite secret organizations must band together to defeat a common enemy.

The main character is named “Eggsy”, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when new ones were woven into the story with names such as “Tequila”, “Champagne”, “Whiskey” or “Ginger Ale.”

In The Secret Service, character development was a necessity to push the plot forward. Regarding The Golden Circle—not so much. In my opinion, backstories or any type of character motivation was lazily meshed through for the sake of focusing on the action.

Also, Julianne Moore as the villainous “Poppy” was a weird choice that didn’t sit right with me–but I ended up enjoying the movie and didn’t put too much thought into it as the film progressed.

Be sure to check out Kingsman: The Golden Circle sometime this weekend. Let me know what y’all think!

Movie Review: Girls Trip

Check out The Original Chatman’s review of Girls Trip!

Ever since the inception of The Hangover franchise, there has been a slow yet steady rise of films in which we witness a group of friends get into some sh*t they can’t get themselves out of; however by the film’s end, the main conflict is resolved. After watching Girls Trip tonight, I can definitely say this—- Girls Trip is far from being another Hangover (no shade)!

First of all, the chemistry of  the protagonists is amazing. Jada Pinkett-SmithQueen LatifahRegina King, and Tiffany Haddish portray four college friends who reunite at the annual Essence Festival after five years of not seeing one another.

Lisa (Pinkett-Smith), Ryan (King), Sasha (Latifah), and Dina (Haddish) were sorority sisters back in the day part of their own little crew called the “Flossy Posse.” For the most part, every comedy in the same lane as Girls Trip has similar character tropes that are played out (i.e. the outlandish comic relief, the serious one, the peacemaker, and the one friend that has beef with the main character).

What makes Girls Trip refreshing is the generic chemistry between the four ladies. Most buddy films attempt to create chemistry between co-stars that comes off as hurried. The cast of Girls Trip deliver as friends in real life.

Additionally, each lead reveals a level of vulnerability often not reserved for comedies. Within the first ten minutes, comedian Tiffany Haddish’s star-power is apparent and her role demands attention that is careful not to diminish the storylines of the other characters.

Finally, four black female leads in a movies is super dope! Despite more a few more dick jokes than I could handle, Girls Trip is a trip you’ll definitely enjoy from start to finish!

[ALBUM REVIEW] “True to Self” x Bryson Tiller

Check out THE ORIGINAL CHATMAN’s review of Bryson Tiller’s sophomore effort, True to Self.

This Friday (June 23rd), would mark the original release date of Bryson Tiller‘s sophomoric effort, True to SelfBryson Tiller must really have the juice like that with his label RCA Records due to him dropping the album a whole MONTH early—May 26th to be exact.

To be honest, I really rock with Bryson Tiller. Ever since his Fall 2015 debut with the infectious T R A P S O U L lead single “Don’t”,  I knew Tiller would stick around and continue making waves in the evolving world of R&B.

Let me begin with the album title: True to Self. After the first few full-length listens, it’s apparent Bryson is still adjusting to his newfound fame while still dealing with his rocky love life.

Nothing new is under the sun when rappers sing; however, when singers lay down rhymes and really well at that? Priceless. Tiller has some legit bars all over on tracks such as “Self Made”, “High Stakes”, and “Before You Judge.”

Personally, I partially feel some tracks on True to Self  sound the same; however, the samples that influence the album’s best tracks (I’ll let y’all decide which songs are the best) will surprise you the most. Sample credits are included from ’90s artist like Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, and SWV. Marsha Ambrosius and Ice Cube even make minor musical influences on the album.

Despite the various musical influences, I admit some songs have similar sounding structures which can be credited to Kentucky producer Nes. Nes produced nine of the nineteen songs from True to Self. Check out the full production and sample credits here at Complex.

What did y’all think of True to Self? Blow up my comments sections and let me know!

Movie Review: “Baywatch”

Check out TheOriginalChatman’s movie review of “Baywatch.”

Welcome to  ♠The Original Chatman’s♠  FIRST EVER movie review! Stay tuned for more in the future!

Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope y’all enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend!

Sunday night, I went to the movies in what felt like forever. In true movie theater fashion, a slew of potential hits (or misses) arrive at the theater around the same time, causing a dilemma on what to watch.

Baywatch was my choice for the night. Here’s my honest spoiler-free review of it below:

Baywatch stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (The Fate of the Furious)Zac EfronPriyanka Chopra (ABC’s Quantico), and Alexandra Daddario (San Andreas).

Dwayne Johnson plays Lieutenant Mitch Buchanan, the leader of Florida’s Emerald Bay lifeguard team. Mitch and his fellow lifeguards, which are of course beautiful women in skin-tight swimsuits, host the annual lifeguard tryouts in which only three recruits can join the Baywatch team.

Dwayne Johnson

However, things are not as they seem on Emerald Bay when flakka, a synthetic drug begins washing up on the beach’s shore. Additionally, the funding for the Baywatch team is threatened to be cut off—henceforth Efron’s character Matt Brody, a two-time gold-winning Olympic swimmer, comes forth as the public relations savior to keep the Baywatch team from disbanding.

Priyanka Chopra channeled her inner James Bond-villian for her role, demanding a grand presence similar to her role as Alex Parrish on Quantico, however with more comedic input than what we’ve seen her act out on screen.

Usually when comedy blockbusters are released, all the funny jokes and punchlines are revealed within the trailer. This was the opposite of Baywatch. The funniest moments of the movie came from Matt and Brody constantly bumping heads with each other. Throw in a bunch of stunts on water-skis and all-terrain vehicles, and the movie is definitely a hit for the summer.

Check out the movie trailer below and go see Baywatch in theaters now!
